As you've no doubt heard by now, Clippers owner Donald Sterling shocked and appalled the world over the weekend after TMZ got their hands on an audio recording that featured him saying a bunch of really, really, really racist things to his girlfriend V. Stiviano. On the tape, Sterling tells her, "You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in. You can do whatever you want. The little I ask is not to promote it on [Instagram]…and not to bring them to my games."
Deadspin also obtained an extended version of the now-infamous phone conversation between Sterling and Stiviano and, during that exchange, the two had a very strange back-and-forth about Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. You can read it in its entirety over here.
Because Kemp's name was specifically mentioned in the recording—and because Stiviano referred to him as "mixed" while speaking with Sterling—Kemp was asked about his thoughts on Sterling's racist comments early and often yesterday. And he responded to Sterling's racist words directly.
"Racism is kind of old, for real," he said. "Honestly, I just feel sorry for him that he feels that way about African-American people."
But that wasn't his only response. In addition to speaking with reporters and giving them a direct response, Kemp also decided to take things a step further. So during the Dodgers game against the Rockies last night, Kemp selected a song for his walk-up music that served as a subtle response to Sterling. That song? Michael Jackson's "Black or White."
Watch him come to home plate with the song playing here:
Well played, Matt.
