The Navy Will Destroy Its Enemies with Lasers

USA! USA! USA!

The only thing that will be able to stand in the way of the US Navy's ship Ponce is a shark with freaking laser beams on its head. Otherwise, forget about it. This summer Ponce will be equipped with its own laser weapon system. The ship will still carry more standard weapons, but the lasers will be used for defense against drones, small boats, light aircrafts, and nearby missiles. Note the absence of sharks with laser beams in that list.

The laser weapon system is called "LaWS," which totally ignores the rules of acronyms—you don't get to use the first two letters. Name aside, the weapons technology is pretty sweet. It can be heavy-handed and light targets on fire or explode their fuel tanks. It can also go lighter by blinding a drone or missile's imaging sensors.
