Before the Big East disbanded in 2013, the conference was home to the best college basketball in the country. A decade ago, winning any seasonal award in the Big East carried huge national weight, and the Big East Freshman of the Year award was one of the more distinguished honors in the country. Melo led the Orange to a 13-3 conference record and ranked third in the conference in rebounding (10.0 per game), fourth in scoring (22.2), and seventh in field goal percentage (45.3%).
