The Land Rover Defender and it's differently named predecessors have been around since 1948, and they've always been favorites of both the world's militaries and the world's off-road enthusiasts. The Defender is a touchstone in the automotive world; think of it as the British 4x4 equivalent of the Ford Mustang.

Sadly, all things must eventually come to an end, and the Defender is facing the executioner in 2015. While it hasn't been on sale in the US for some time, we were still hopeful that it would get a safety update to make it legal for sale here once more.

There is still rumor that a new, global Defender is going to be unveiled in 2015, however, so we're still willing to watch and wait.
