American Mark Spitz took home seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, a record that would only be bested by Michael Phelps' eight in Beijing 2008. Spitz also set world records in all seven events that he conquered, a record that remains in tact today. A three-time World Swimmer of the Year, Spitz racked up 24 gold medals in international swimming competitions between 1967-1972. He finally called it quits after his historic run during those '72 games.
