Few people seem as invincible as our favorite athletes. Ballers performing phenomenal feats on the field of play can sometimes make us forget that they’re even mortal. In some cases though, we’re given cruel reminders of just how human they are. Whether it be on the practice field or during actual competition, the impact of seeing a teammate, a leader, and most importantly a friend going down right before your eyes is indescribable for fan and athlete alike.

We’ve witnessed horrific car crashes and fatal punches, but we’ve also seen athletes go down with no sign or warning at all. Both stir our saddest emotions and remind us that nothing lasts forever. Perhaps some solace can be taken in the fact that at least these titans of the playing field went down doing what they loved. From Reggie Lewis to Miklós "Miki" Fehér, we pay tribute with, In Memoriam: A History of Athletes Dying on the Field of Play...
