The summer of 1987 NYC mayor Ed Koch tried to pass a ban on bicycles in midtown Manhattan. The ban never took hold as a result of the thousands of cyclists that poured onto the streets from 31st to 59th on Fifth, Madison, and Park avenues in protest, as detailed in Charles Komanoff's "The 1987 Bicycle UprisingParts 1, 2 3, and 4.
