During the 1995-96 season, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf caught tons of flack when he sat through the playing of the "Star-Spangled Banner." He said that he felt the American flag represented "oppression and tyranny," which went against his Islamic faith. Because of his actions, Abdul-Rauf received a one-game suspension. Later on, the NBA and the Denver Nuggets guard worked out a compromise where he would stand for the playing of the anthem but still be able to bow his head in prayer. Though quite controversial at the time, we can't knock dude for stan...uh, we mean, sitting down for what he believes in. Makes sense, right?
