It's already been confirmed that the 2012 VW Beetle will spawn a GTI-ish 200 horsepower turbo Beetle variant, and that a Beetle R is to follow, but the engine powering said ultimate bug was up in the air. It was beginning to look like the Beetle R was going to have a disappointing 235 horse TFSI as its heart, but German mag Auto, Motor, und Sport reports that it will be getting the most powerful four-pot the VW group has to offer.
While a 270 horse beetle with Haldex all-wheel drive will be awesome in and of itself, we're really hoping to see a Baja variant kicking up a huge dust cloud in the not too distant future. Wolfsburg, are you listening?
