Some people call it the stoner mobile, some say it's the official transportation choice for hippies worldwide. We say Volkswagen's Type 2, aka the Transporter, aka the Bus aka the Microbus was one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. What started off as an awkward bus looking car, the Beatles big brother went onto become the face of Volkswagen. Right before it seeped into every facet of pop culture. From movies to music, the Bus has been there, so it's only right that we look back on some of its greatest moments as it turns the big 6-0! Take a look at some of our favorite moments in Volkswagen Bus history...
The Volkswagen Type 2 Begins Production (1950)
COMPLEX SAYS: It may have been approved for production in 1947, but it wasn't until 1950 that the Type 2 rolled off the assembly line and started its quest of world wide domination as the first minivan ever.
Libyan Terrorists Use the Bus in Back to the Future (1985)
COMPLEX SAYS: The '80s classic established the VW bus as the ride of choice for plutonium-hungry scientist killas. Damn Libyans!
Musiq Soulchild Uses Transporter to Bag A Cutie (2000)
COMPLEX SAYS: What do BoHo, neo-soul singers drive? A VW Bus, of course! In the first video for his debut album, Philly's Musiq Soulchild courts a PYT, then convinces her that if she chills in his van with him before the party he won't rape her.
Kelso's Volkswagen Bus Takes A Plunge (2003)
COMPLEX SAYS: If you were looking for authenticity in a show, That 70's Show was pretty on point (especially with those table sessions). However it didn't dawn on the creators to insert the bus (yes pun intended) until the sixth season of the show. Unfortunately the cameo was short lived as one of Kelso's shaggin' wagons ironically fell off Mount Hump.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Recognizes the VW Bus (2004)
COMPLEX SAYS: Even though San Andreas was based on the 90's, what would the 90's be without that chill hippie stoner everyone knew? (Word to Willie Nelson). That's why the mission "Are You Going To San Fierro?" is not only one of the funniest, but relevant to this list. Burn the weed farm and make a run for it. Sure, no one buys a Volkswagen Bus as a getaway ride, but you just burned down an acre of weed and shot down a helicopter in one shot-- anythings possible.
The Volkswagen Transporter Has Officially Been Pimped (2004)
COMPLEX SAYS: OH MY FUCKING GOD IT'S XZIBIT! HE'S COME TO FIX MY SHITTY CAR! *jumps on Xzibit making him feel relevant* Pimp My Ride is a great show. Not only did they take a Volkswagen Bus and fix it up, they included additions that are best described as absurd. They hooked it up with an 40" LCD tv, a PS2, new stereo, a shag rug, a surf board rack, and a clothes dryer because dude is a surfer! *Xzibit Voice* "With a dryer, you won't be able to keep the ladys wet! HAHAHAHA"...*awkward silence and roll credits*
George Carlin as Fillmore the Volkswagen Bus (2006)
COMPLEX SAYS: George Carlin was a king in the comedy world. He made us feel like it was okay to be inappropriate and vulgar. However in his later years he would come to sign on to the Pixar movie Cars. In what we're guessing was a shout out to his generation, he played Fillmore, a Volkswagen Bus. Sure it was a minor roll, but the VW Bus couldn't get a better co-sign.
The Bus Stars in Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
COMPLEX SAYS:The Bus should have gotten a best supporting actor nomination for its role in this Indie hit where a family treks across the country for a beauty pageant.
Billy F. Gibbons Volkswagen Bus Art (2007)
COMPLEX SAYS: We're quite sure ZZ Top's band members did their fair share of drugs back in the day. However, when the Volkswagen Bus met Bill F. Gibbons, dude took creativity to an all time high. So some how, he created a VW Bus ball. A sphere that is not only very impractical to drive (unless you're playing Super Monkey Ball), but indescribably awesome.
The Who Give Away Custom Bus for Cancer (2008)
COMPLEX SAYS: The Who love Volkswagen Buses. So much so that when they wanted to do help raise awareness about kids with cancer, they customized a Type 2 and made it the prize in a music competition that had the proceeds going to the UK based Teenage Cancer Trust.
Volkswagen uses the Bus to take shots at Honda (2009)
COMPLEX SAYS: In case you missed it, instead of making a new version of the Bus, Volkswagen called on Dodge to build them a minivan. Then, in an attempt to gain some marketshare, they made commercials taking shots at the Japanese minivans that were starting to dominate the market. And who did they call to blast off? The OG minivan himself, the OG Type 2, voiced by none other than Thomas Haden Church.
