Since its release in 1982, the New Balance 990 — along with its later releases — has been loved by sneakerheads and runners alike.

A quintessential classic, NB’s Made In USA line has always prided itself on the finest materials and construction, but now, with the arrival of its v6 successor fast approaching, the footwear label has unveiled its current 990v5 model in a vegan-friendly iteration.

Presented in the footwear label’s signature grey palette, the 990v5 Vegan has been crafted with sustainability in mind, opting to use a vegan alternative instead of the typical pigskin suede that adorns the majority of its uppers. Across the silhouette, vegan leather has been introduced alongside a breathable mesh that lays underneath the shoe’s uppers, while plastic overlays feature on the three-quarter and heel cup.

At first glance the vegan version may look somewhat identical to the original offering, however; the plant-based iteration features a subtle green and white “V” logo on the heel, nodding to its vegan nature. Elsewhere, New Balance’s epochal branding and badge have been reworked across the tongue of the sneaker in a complimentary greyscale finish.

Rounding out the eco-friendly design is an EVA midsole fitted with ENCAP technology and a robust rubber outsole.
