As New Balance is being widely condemned after issuing a pro-Trump statement in regard to his stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the sneaker industry's heavyweight is lining up on the opposing side in the name of global warming.
According to Fortune, Nike is part of a large group of more than 300 firms that signed an open letter to President-elect Trump, urging him to keep policies in place that safeguard against global warming.
“We want the U.S. economy to be energy efficient and powered by low-carbon energy,” the letter says. “Failure to build a low-carbon economy puts American prosperity at risk.”
Though he denied it in debates, Trump famously reduced global warming to a China-created conspiracy theory in a Tweet.
In particular, the companies hope to see Trump move forward with the Paris Climate Agreement, a non-binding agreement between the U.S. and more than 100 other countries designed to scale back greenhouse gases.
To date, Nike hasn't issued a broader statement on the Trump election. Earlier this year, protestors put forth a petition calling for the brand to move its New York City Niketown store, located in a Trump owned building.
