The war on the counterfeit sneaker industry will likely never be "won," but that isn't stopping Nike from attempting to defend its name.
According to IPPro The Internet, Nike recently won the rights to 20 fake sneaker selling domains in a UDRP dispute at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Centre. A ruling handed down by Wilson Pinheiro Jabur stated that the infringing domain names are to be transferred to Nike, as the original registrant of the names, Gueijuan Xu, had registered and used them in bad faith—i.e. to sell counterfeit goods.
The list includes domains such as nikeairmax97.com, shopsnikeukoutlet.com and nike-trademark.com, which Nike claimed were nearly identical to some of its registered trademarks. A few of the pages already re-direct to the official nike.com site.
This isn't the only recent victory Nike and its subsidiaries have scored against the counterfeit market. Earlier this year, the U.S. government intercepted $54,000 worth of knockoff Air Jordans en route from China.
