For most intents and purposes, the Cortez, first released in 1972, is the sneaker that started it all for Nike. More than 40 years later, it's become more than just a piece of footwear — it's found its place in hip-hop, film, and television. It's now finally set to be retroed in a way that's true to its original design in '72, not the silhouette that more people have become familiar with.

The difference with this Cortez, according to Nike, is "Details like zig-zag edges, a back pull tab, rubber toe cap, exposed foam tongue, and a minimal leather upper."

This is a recreation of the style that was worn by the late Steve Prefontaine, who's an integral part of Nike's history.

As far as a release goes, this Cortez will come out on September 24 at NikeLab locations.
