Nike and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore., are in their 11th year of the "Doernbecher Freestyle Program," which allows select children at the hospital to design their own pairs of sneakers. For this year's collection, there will be a Nike SB Dunk Hi take on the "What The" theme that incorporates designs elements from all 13 of the Nike SB sneakers that have been included in Doernbecher projects in the past, a Nike press release announced today.
According to Nike, only 11 pairs of these "What The" Dunks will be made, ranging from sizes 8-12 and 13 and 14, and will be available for auction on eBay starting June 11. The auctions will last 10 days.
To top off this collaboration, the sneakers will come packed with scrubs from the Doernbecher hospital along with a box made of recycled skateboard decks. The rest of this year's Doernbecher will be revealed on October 23.
UPDATE (June 11, 2015, 6:35 p.m.):
The "What the Doernbecher" Dunk auctions have only been up for a few hours and prices are already reaching unheard of territory. As of writing this, there are currently two auctions with bids over $100,000, with another 7 auctions over the $90,000 mark. Considering that the profits will benefit the Doernbecher hospital, this is pretty incredible.
