Mike Packer is a boss. For those that are familiar with his shop, Packer Shoes, it’s a continuation of a century-long family run business and one of the best stores in New York City—except that it’s located in New Jersey. When Packer isn’t behind the scenes with brands, he’s putting out athletic-inspired collaborations that dream up what-if scenarios for those with an enthusiasm for sneakers. That means Packer has come up with PE Reebok sneakers for LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, Dominique Wilkins was given the Reebok Pump PE he always deserved, and Larry Johnson was commemorated with a four pack of Fila FX-100s.

It’s not just the solid themes, though, that draw people to Packer Shoes. It’s Mike Packer’s understanding of sneaker brands’ histories from yesteryear that bring a certain type of stewardship to his retail venture, and that’s what keeps people trekking out to Teaneck.

Location: Aberdeen, Scotland

The fact that one of the world's best sneaker boutiques exists in Scotland speaks volumes to the universality of sneakers. It's also a reason why Hanon receives so much respect, not to mention its more than two decades of being in business.

With the world's eyes on sneaker hubs such as New York, London, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Berlin, Hanon continues to be one of the shops that gets the first information. But as well known as the shop has become, it remains somewhat mysterious. Its collaborations are solid, it's at the top of almost every brand's list as a retailer, but it's not the flashy store with in-the-spotlight owners or swarming with influencers. It's just a shop that does what it does well, and in a city of only 200,000 or so. And that's what makes it great. It's literal a niche store in a niche city selling amazing sneakers.

Location: Tokyo, New York City

Sneaker culture may have started in New York City, but it was seriously accelerated by Japan's interest in everything American and doing it better than the States. The one store that bridges that gap is atmos. Started in Tokyo, atmos has also opened up a store in Harlem and operates them as two separate entities that do their own collaborations and have their own identities. While atmos was quick to spread its influence across the globe, it also rose to notoriety due to having the first ever collaboration on the Air Max 1, which took place in 2003. And over a decade later, atmos' name still draws excitement when its attached to a Nike silhouette—take a look at the Air Max 1s it released in 2006 and the 90s and AM1s from last year—or any other brand for that matter. What atmos does well is that they take the sneakers and themes that are familiar to us and change them ever so slightly. For instance, the shop recently took the O.G. Instapump Fury colorway and added a textured sweatpant material to the toe box. Not to say that atmos hasn't brought the eccentricities of Japanese sneaker culture to its work, too, but it's made products that are relatable across an ocean and back.

To be a successful sneaker boutique these days, it's almost a prerequisite for a shop to have a theme behind it, and none did it better than Dave's Quality Meat, which based its New York City storefront off an old-school butcher shop. Started by  Dave Ortiz and Chris Keeffe, Dave's Quality Meats—which isn't the same as DQM nowadays—served up credibility to a sneaker culture that found itself connecting to skateboarding and hip-hop through the lens of streetwear. It wasn't just the butcher theme of the storefront that became famous, though, but it also found its way onto Dave Quality Meat's biggest collaboration of all time: the "Bacon" Nike Air Max 90. Made to look like the layers of fat on a slice of pork belly, the "Bacon" was executed in a buttery suede and also came in a limited friends and family edition.

While those 90s are what people remember most about the shop, it also did tonal Nike Dunks way before monochrome footwear became ubiquitous. And it showed, through working with fellow shops HUF and Kicks/Hi on the 3 Feet High and Rising collection with Vans, that there was a kinship in the niche sneaker community. These weren't just competing stores that were trying to take each other over—they were different representations of the same idea spread out in different cities. It just so happens that Dave's Quality Meat was authentically New York.

Location: Amsterdam

Amsterdam plays a huge role in the worldwide sneaker perspective. For starters, it's where Nike's international headquarters are located and home to upcoming luxury sneaker brands Filling Pieces and ETQ. But there's something that the Dutch city has that builds its credibility amongst those with a strong love for footwear, and that's sneaker boutique Patta. The store's takes on the Air Max 1 are pieces of lore within the sneakerhead community, and the "Amsterdam" Air Max 1—along with the sample white/orange/blue version—is just as revered as the O.G. white/red and white/blue editions of the 1987 runner. Patta's work has made its city synonymous with this silhouette, and its European streetwear flavor—which has seen the shop work on adidas ZX models and give soccer-inspired designs to Italian-made runners—has translated far beyond the Euro Zone. It easily had the best jersey designed for the World Cup this year, and it had people searching for them who didn't even know that Patta drew a well-endowed woman on the insole of the "Amsterdam" Air Max 1s. And who can forget the “Homegrown” Air Max 90s?

Outside of its work on the Air Max 1, Patta gained notability for a very early collaboration on the Gel Lyte III, long before it was a go-to silhouette for other shops. It’s this daring nature which makes Patta great: It works on something when it has a feeling, not when it knows something is already popular.

Location: Cambridge, Mass.

For a store that started out as a lifestyle shop in the back of Cambridge, Mass.’s The Tannery, Concepts is doing pretty well for itself. Located in one of the most historic regions of the United States, the shop plays off its local history on collaborative projects that call upon the city’s lore, which has led to carrying exclusive sneakers for House of Pain, ASICS that play on the John Harvard statue, Nike SB Dunks made to look a lobster, or, even more recently, Reebok Pumps that pay tribute to lost Boston Celtic Reggie Lewis. (And don't forget last year's work with New Balance on the 988 C-Notes and Mints, either).

Concepts, which has become more revered since opening its own store (located right next to The Tannery) in 2008, also is somewhat of anomaly in the world of sneaker boutiques. It was one of the first stores to offer a broad variety of accounts: Nike SB, Air Jordan, Tier Zero, and put them next to luxury offerings from Saint Laurent Paris, Gucci, and Visvim. So if you’re not coming to Concepts for the collabs or you’re just a rich Ivy Leaguer spending your parents dough, you’re there because of the variety of options the store presents.

Opened in 2002, just a year after New York's Alife Rivington Club, London's Foot Patrol gave the Big Smoke its own sneaker connoisseur's paradise. The shop was founded by Michael Kopleman, the man who brought Stussy to the UK and, with partner Fraser Cooke (you know, the guy who brought energy to Nike), ignited London's love of Japanese streetwear in 1998 through his vision for the Hide Out. Foot Patrol drew from the same insider-y mindset, and in original form was set in an almost hidden Soho alleyway. From there, Kopleman's creation drew global acclaim for collaborations on the Nike Air Stab, Nike Air Max 90, and adidas Campus, as well as the originality of its visual merchandising.

In 2010, Foot Patrol moved to a new (slightly more high profile) location at 80 Berwick Street. In the environment, FP continues its tradition of quality collaboration—a stellar Reebok Workout Low and the recent Huarache Light come to mind—while maintaining a stock of top-shelf releases to match anywhere in the world.

Location: California, Las Vegas, Tokyo

No sneaker boutique has crossed over into the mainstream like Undefeated. For newcomers to the world of limited-edition sneakers, it might be hard to fathom Undefeated as a sneakers-only shop, but that's how Eddie Cruz and James Bond started their business over a decade ago. But Undefeated's contribution to boutique culture goes far beyond expanding into a full clothing line that can be purchased at Urban Outfitters and Foot Action, although Undefeated has worked with the latter on collaborations. The shop established itself through its military-inspired flight jacket theme, which has been seen on its Air Jordan IV, Converse Poorman Weapons, Air Force 1s, and more, but Undefeated was able to transcend the sneaker collaboration—not just by doing high-profile, low-number projects on Jordans—but by having its products earn pop-cultural moments. Remember the Air Force 1s that Turtle got in Entourage? Those were a special makeup of an Undefeated x Nike AF1. So as the boutique continues to expand and open more locations, its positioned itself to make this niche subculture crossover to new audiences who want something real.

ALIFE’s Rivington Club was one of the first sneaker boutiques to open in New York City, and one of the few to actually live up to the “boutique” sobriquet. Located on an obscure block in the Lower East Side (one that’s gotten much more friendly in the past decade), there was—and still is—no sign, just a door and a buzzer. Inside, the club theme is emphasized with thick carpeting, muted lighting, and sneakers displayed in individual wooden cubbyholes. They were ahead of the curve on many things, stocking obscure and highly sought-after Nikes (“Viotech” Dunks, Wovens) before there was a 21 Mercer, selling the very first Jeremy Scott adidas that he had made for a runway show, and collaborating with adidas on a killer off-white canvas Stan Smith way back in 2009. And they were on the ASICS collab game early too, with 2007’s wild “Monster” Gel Lyte IIIs and the following year’s more subdued offerings. Even their own sneakers made a splash, from Vans-inspired vulc-sole models to the Dunk-inspired Everybody High. If you name it, ALIFE probably did it. Fourteen years in the game, and they’re still doing it. Respect the originators.

There’s one common thread that keeps all of these stores as relevant as they are —no we’re not talking about excellent customer service or carrying exclusive sneakers (although that helps), but, instead, it’s hype. And where does this hype come from? Well, we can blame multiple teasers of collaborations, the limited numbers they come in, or we can even point the finger at ourselves: the blogs. But when we’re talking about sneaker boutiques, there’s none that generates this hype-driven market more than Flight Club. That’s because it serves as a secondary market for sneakers that release in the hundreds.

Founded in 2005, Flight Club is a must-see destination for those coming to NYC or L.A., and its walls and website are filled with all the sneakers that everyone is looking for. It also rewards the people who can get their hands on these elusive pairs by offering an 80/20 split on everything that’s consigned. Since its opening, it's spawned a bevy of imitators. (If you live in the Tri-State Area, you know what we’re talking about.) And everyone is trying to get in on the consignment hype. But there’s something that Flight Club has: a reputation. As long its open, or there are other shops around like it, these limited sneakers will sellout, even if the buyers don’t intend to wear them ever.
