For the seventh installment of the Air Zoom Elite series, Nike looked towards who knows best for advice: athletes.

Through feedback from various runners, including American record holders Evan Jager and Matt Tegenkamp, Nike came to the conclusion that most athletes are incorporating tempo runs more and more into their everyday workouts. In tempo runs, quickness and speed are crucial, which is why Nike has created the lightest Nike Air Zoom Elite yet at just 8oz. for women and 9.6 oz. for men.

“The Elite is my go-to for tempo runs, which are an important part of my training plan,” said Tegenkamp, who owns the American outdoor record in the 2-mile. “Zoom Air cushioning under the forefoot gives the Elite a really snappy response off the ground, so I feel fast and light with each stride.”

Nike found that runners are more likely to strike with the forefoot during tempo runs, so the swoosh put zoom air cushioning in the forefoot. A new lower profile brings runners closer to the ground and helps enable a more natural foot strike.

“We designed this Air Zoom Elite around the tempo run, but it’s versatile so runners of all levels and paces can enjoy it,” said Mark Miner, Senior Footwear Designer.
