Ethiopian race entrant Amena Gobena won an extra $50,000 for outrunning all the men in the Asics LA Marathon this past weekend in the City of Angels.
The women's elite field was given a 17-minute 14-second head start over the men's field, with the winner receiving a $50,000 bonus, as part of the race's gender challenge. With a time of 2:27:37, Gobena edged out fellow Ethiopian Gebo Burka by 41 seconds, making the women victorious in the battle of the sexes.
In addition to the $25,000 purse for winning the women's race, Gobena took home a grand total of $75,000 which she says she will build a new home with. This is Gobena's fifth career marathon win.
