Both the Asics Gel-Lyte33 and the Asics Gel-Lyte33 2 left quite a positive impression on Sneaker Report wear-testers in the last couple of years. So it makes sense why we’re excited about the third installment of the lightweight Asics trainer, the Gel-Lyte33 3.

With a complete redesign from heel-to-toe, the Gel-Lyte33 3 features the most dramatic change we’ve seen in the shoe to date. In the 3, Asics has done away with the bulky overlays seen in previous models and replaced it with a thinner webbing for a completely streamlined look. The immediate result is a significant weight reduction (from 8.7 ounces to 6.8).

While the current version features a combination of Solyte and SpEVA in the midsole, the upcoming model will go with a full Solyte unit, making the shoe even lighter. Also present in the Gel-Lyte33 3 is a carryover FluidAxis midsole seen in the 2.

The Gel-Lyte33 3 should begin hitting retail shelves in February 2014. Word on the street is, Asics—the official sponsor of the L.A. Marathon—will even roll out special edition colorways of the shoe to promote the March 9th race.
