On Sunday, Usain Bolt won the IAAF World Championship gold medal in the 100m with a time of 9.77 seconds. Racking up his sixth World Championship gold, Bolt solidified the fact that he is indeed one of the fastest men in the world. But on this day in 2008, Bolt was just beginning to build his gold collection as he participated in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
On August 16, 2008, Usain Bolt broke through to global recognition as he set a new 100m record with a time of 9.69 seconds, which bested his previously set record of 9.72 seconds and left second-place finisher Richard Thompson in the dust at 9.89 seconds. And Bolt didn't stop there; he also took home golds in the 200m and 4x 100m relay, setting another record in the 200 m and becoming the first sprinter to break two records in a single Olympic games.
