4. Nike Air Max 90
The Air Max series was in the infant stages when the Air Max 90 dropped. We'd had the original Air Max and a similar sequel with 1989's Air Max Light update, but this was the 'Godfather Part II' of sneaker follow-ups, with the side panels, maximized window and plastic detailing making the Visible Air concept still seem revolutionary. Was it targeted at serious runners? That's debatable — Nike had some tremendous offerings around this time with them in mind, but that silhouette is a definitive running style. This is Europe's own Air Force 1 in the street-level stakes and it's still a bestseller among kids whose parents were at the holding hands stage back when it dropped. An undisputed icon.
