5. New Balance 1300

Year: 1984

Insanely expensive on its release at $130 plus tax, the New Balance was made for the real-deal runners. But that RRP made them appealing to the ballers out there too, who probably wouldn't have reaped the benefits of the 1300's carbon rubber outsole, new last, encapsulated midsole, talk of orthotics, shock reduction and motion control. They might have appreciated the stealthy shape, premium nubuck on the upper and the way the whole shebang stayed lightweight, but it was the fact that this was the Maybach of the footwear world that puts them up here in the list. US-made and UK-made versions are still readily available, and because of their breakthrough status, they edge the 1400 out this list.
