16. ASICS Tiger X-Caliber

Year: 1982

Bizarrely, this model is now released as an Onitsuka Tiger branded shoe rather than ASICS, but most people don't appreciate just how much of a game changer the X-Caliber GT was. The Air Flex canals cut into the midsole might look like gimmickry, but runners have testified to their effectiveness when it came to cushioning. The real breakthrough move here was the application of the plastic medial post for pronation control after research by notable podiatrist Joe Ellis. A very serious sneaker was also a very beautiful one indeed.
