20. New Balance 577

Year: 1989

Some will get angry at the lack of 576 and 574 here, but they always seemed geared toward casual wear and walking, despite their beautiful looks. Excuses aside, the 577 had to be included here as the bonafide performance piece of the trio. Greys and blues are the definitive no-nonsense palette, while the shark-like silhouette, support and ENCAP-aided shock absorption and resilience all worked perfectly. The Israeli army editions with the Hebrew lettering on the label were serious, but leave those inferior editions with the extra plastic panel well alone.
