Matt Damon is getting roasted on social media for appearing in a cringeworthy Crypto.com ad.

Many people found the TV spot, which ran during Sunday’s slate of NFL games and has recently screened in cinemas, to be obnoxious. Which is understandable considering it suggests that people who buy cryptocurrency can enter the world inhabited by historical game-changers such as the Wright Brothers.

“History is filled with almosts,” Damon says as he walks by an explorer who sailed around the world hundreds of years ago. “With those who almost adventured, who almost achieved, but then it proved to be too much.”

“Then there are others, who embraced the moments, and commit,” the Oscar-winning actor adds, as he continues past clips of the Wright Brothers taking to the air for the first time. “And in these moments of truth, these men and women, these mere mortals, just like you and me, as they peer over the edge, they calm their minds and steel their nerves, with four simple words that have been whispered by the intrepid since the time of the Romans: Fortune favors the brave.”

At that point, the screen shows the Crypto.com web address and logo, bringing home the message that those who snatch up some cryptocurrency have a chance to be mentioned in the same breath as the aforementioned pioneers.

saddest thing about Matt Damon's macho-baiting crypto pitch where the viewer must ACT NOW or he's a weak pussy is that this is a top 3 classic pitch all financial schemes have used to goad men into forking over their paltry savings. Nothing has changed in 150 years

Just want to put a marker on this. We now have primetime nfl broadcast ads featuring movie stars valorizing as the next frontier of human exploration passive investments in a wholly artificial class of assets—where your return depends on attracting more investors to the scheme. pic.twitter.com/abNLmPexxd

That commercial makes me think Matt Damon is angling to play a Winklevoss Twin in Bitcoin Billionaires.

I think what Matt Damon is saying is don’t worry if #Bitcoin destroys the planet because you can now use it to buy potatoes on Mars. Exciting! pic.twitter.com/6epI1RhtBV
