It can be easy to feel like you're in the center of the universe, until something like this reminds you just how big the world is, and how fast it moves. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the largest city in the world by population. It includes part of both the main island and the Izu and Ogasawara islands.

Shanghai is the most populous urban area in China, and is a global economic and transportation center. It has its own distinctive dialect, and is home to a variety of religions, including Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, and Judaism.
São Paulo, Brazil

Located in the southeastern part of the country, São Paulo is not only the most populous city in Brazil, but also in the Western and Southern hemispheres. It is considered a “melting pot” of cultures, and is home to the largest Arab, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese diasporas. Fun fact: Its Gay Pride Parade rivals New York City's as the largest in the world.
México City, México

With a rich history, México City is the oldest capital city in the Americas, and one of two founded by indigenous populations (the other is Quito, Ecuador). The city's politics include a number of progressive policies, such as abortion on demand, no-fault divorce, same-sex marriage, and limited elective euthanasia.

Dhaka is one of the major cities of East Asia, and has been inhabited since the first millennium. It is bounded by four different rivers, and accounts for up to 35 percent of Bangladesh's economy.
