Daniel Craig Says Women Should Get Parts ‘Just as Good’ as James Bond Rather Than Taking Over Role

Daniel Craig is the latest person to chime in on the question of whether or not a future iteration of James Bond should in fact be played by a woman.

Daniel Craig is weighing in on if a woman should take on the role of James Bond.

The longtime Bond actor opened up to Radio Times weeks before the U.S. release of No Time to Die, explaining that the answer, for him, is “very simple.”

“There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color,” Craig said. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

Craig isn’t the only 007-affiliate to share a statement like this, either. Franchise producer Barbara Broccoli agreed more roles like Bond should be available for women, but thought the role of Bond should stay with a man.

“He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male,” Broccoli said in an interview with The Guardian. “And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

Rosamund Pike, who starred in Die Another Day, also agrees that Bond should remain a man. “I think the character of James Bond is a man. He is really,” she said in 2018. “Why not make a kick-ass female agent in her own right?”

Lashana Lynch, who stars in the upcoming Bond film, told The Guardian that the character “could be a man or woman” or “white, black, Asian, mixed race.”

“They could be young or old,” Lynch said. “At the end of the day, even if a two-year-old was playing Bond, everyone would flock to the cinema to see what this two-year-old’s gonna do, no?”
