Cult horror movies generally fall into one of two categories: those that are so horribly ineffective at being scary that they can be watched as comedies (see: Troll 2), and those that are so horrifying that they become instant classics. Hellraiser certainly falls into the latter category, with the Cenobite Pinhead establishing himself as one of cinema’s most terrifying figures throughout the series’ nine films (with another on the way later this year). The first film is a master class in how to make horror on an extremely low budget, and remains the bar for British horror films.
