I despise driving, so the future bodes well for a man of my disposition. Though self-driving cars (not pictured above) are coming much sooner than you might think, a recent study from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute indicates that some of us should probably expect to do a bit of vomiting when behind the nonexistent wheel of the future.

According to the LA Times, the study indicates that up to 10% of "American adults riding in fully self-driving cars" would need to prepare to "often, usually, or always" experience some level of motion sickness. Though such a statistic certainly dampers the excitement, there are certain design-based measures that car manufacturers can take to prevent or lessen the severity of such sickness.

Researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle advise that designers install large, transparent windows and ensure that any video displays promote looking straight ahead (as opposed to down or at an angle, which increases the likelihood of motion sickness). Furthermore, Sivak and Schoettle strongly advise against the inclusion of swivel seats.

The world really will be saved through design.
