After her lauded performance in Hustlers, Jennifer Lopez was expecting an Oscar nomination—particularly after it was widely hailed as one of the best performances of her career. It helped that the film grossed almost $160 million at the global box office.
Yet, when nominations came around on Jan. 13, Lopez wasn’t selected for the Best Supporting Actress category, much to the shock of both Oscar prognosticators and fans alike.
Lopez discussed her disappointment during the latest stop on Oprah Winfrey’s 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour. The singer and actress told Oprah that her omission “felt like I let everyone down a little bit,” Deadline reports.
“I was sad. I was a little sad because there was a lot of buildup to it. There were so many articles, I got so many good notices — more than ever in my career — and there was a lot of: ‘She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar, it’s going to happen; if it doesn’t you’re crazy,'" she added. "I’m reading all the articles going: ‘Oh my god, could this happen?’ And then it didn’t and I was like: ‘Ouch.’ It was a little bit of a letdown.”
Despite the film's near-universal acclaim, it failed to make a real dent during awards season. Along with Lopez, the film was altogether shut out at the Academy Awards. And while Lopez earned nominations at the Golden Globes and Indie Spirit Awards, she ultimately didn’t win. She did get picked by Los Angeles Film Critics Association as the Best Supporting Actress of the year.
Lopez’s next role is in the pop-star comedy Marry Me, alongside Owen Wilson and Sarah Silverman.
