Every June 21, skaters around the world celebrate their Independence Day, known simply as Go Skateboarding Day. Founded in 2003 by the International Association of Skateboarding Companies (IASC), Go Skateboarding Day originated as a few isolated skate sessions and barbecues in SoCal but has grown into a 24-hour period of all-out madness for skate enthusiasts to celebrate the sport and culture that drives them. Literally. This is a day where manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, local skate shops, and, of course, skaters from around the globe unite to celebrate a culture that is as much about community involvement as it as about rebellion.

Today, skate rats of the nation’s capital will glide into D.C.’s premier skateshop Palace5ive for their fourth annual Palace to Pulaski event. At noon, skaters will meet (or swarm) at the shop before heading down the block to the corner of 14th & W for a day full of skate contests, prizes, free food, and appearances by the DGK skate team. There will be injuries, possible arrests, and hundreds of kids skating to Wacka Flocka, but that’s any Tuesday to your average skater. So whether you’re a hardcore skater or just a supporter of the culture in D.C., come out and celebrate with the P5 crew today.

Oh, now that you’re done reading this, get off your ass and go skate.—Julian Kimble (@JRK316)
