Google Scoops Up Another 1,200 Patents From IBM

It's in a heated arms race.

Google just purchased 1,203 patents from IBM, in addition to the 1,030 patents it bought from the company just last July. The company has gone patent crazy in recent months because it says it wants to protect Android from "“hostile, organized campaign” by the likes of Apple and Microsoft to bring it down via painful litigation. (We've seen what havoc Apple has been able to wreak against Samsung in the courts).

Patents are cited as one of the key reasons Google spent $12.3 billion on Motorola last month, but some people think the 17,500 patents and 7,500 pending patent applications it won in that deal aren't actually worth very much.
