Netflix Canada is launching a cheaper, more accessible subscription tier that will come with ads and a smaller library.

The new plan will be available as of Nov. 1 and will be priced at $5.99 per month, nearly half the price of the Basic plan, and $10 cheaper than the Standard plan.

The biggest tradeoff with the new ad-supported plan will be having to watch 4-5 minutes of ads for every hour watched, similar to how network and cable television used to work before streaming became popular.

In addition to ads and fewer titles to choose from, users will not be able to download any shows or movies for remote viewing.

The streaming quality will also be capped at 720p, a step below the 1080p offered in the Standard plan.

Netflix isn’t the only major streamer slated to offer a cheaper, ad-filled plan. Disney Plus has also detailed plans for its own ad tier which is slated to come out in December in the United States and at a later date in Canada.

The streaming service hasn’t slowed down its releases, having put out over 1000 unique episodes of TV in the third quarter of 2022 alone.
