Impressive, considering the slow start.

The numbers are in, showing that Washington earned just under $4 million in sales during the state's first month of legal, recreational marijuana sales.

According to the Associated Press, stores sold a reported $3.8 million worth of marijuana, which is anticipated to generate upwards of $1 million in tax revenue. What's impressive is that, while roughly 40 stores were given licenses, just 18 sold marijuana last month. The Associated Press adds that 16 have stores recorded sales during the month of August.

By comparison, Colorado sold $14 million worth of weed during its first month of legalization earlier this year, resulting in about $2 million worth of tax revenue. Colorado, which the Associated Press has made roughly $30 million from fees, licensing and taxes since sales began, enjoyed its best month in terms of sales in June: $24.7 million.

Washington Liquor Control Board spokesman Brian Smith told the Associated Press he's confident about the future of legalization in the state. "It's off to a healthy start, considering that the system isn't fully up and running yet," he said.
