Poll Shows Two-Thirds of Americans Support Alternatives to Death by Lethal Injection

The mishandled execution of an Oklahoma man last month has resulted in a poll where the majority of respondents support alternative methods to death by lethal injection.

NBC News reports that, out of 800 adults, two-thirds were in favor of utilizing the gas chamber, electric chair, firing squad, and hanging for the death penalty

Conversely, a third say that executions should cease completely if lethal injections are done away due to drug shortages or other assorted problems.

The discussion was spurred by the circumstances Clayton Lockett died under on Apr. 29. Lockett, sentenced to death after being convicted of murder and rape, regained consciousness during the execution and began to yell in pain. Though the process was stopped, Lockett later died due to complications.
