A woman in Pennsylvania claims she didn't know that her son had died until she detected the smell left by his decomposing body days after his death.
The Associated Press reports that Kimberly Tutko was eventually alerted of her 8-year-old son Jarrod's death several days later by her husband, Jarrod Tutko. According to the PennLive.com, Jarrod Tutko was the main caretaker for the boy, who suffered from both autism and Fragile X Syndrome. His condition caused him to destroy his room on the third floor of their Harrisburg, Pa. home, wiping his feces on the walls and ripping up the carpet.
PennLive.com reports that when Kimberly Tutko asked her husband why he didn't say anything about their son's death earlier, he explained that he was scared to do so because there were other kids in the house.
Kimberly Tutko explained that she did not know her son was dead for days because she was constantly caring for another disabled child who lives in their home. The Tutkos have five other children, who the Associated Press says were removed from their home by the state.
Jarrod Tutko was charged with abuse of a corpse, concealing the death of a child, and child endangerment. At the moment, it remains unclear exactly how the boy died, but an autopsy will be performed this week.
