UPDATE: According to the Washington Post, Oceana Irizarry succumbed to her injuries at a St. Petersburg, Fla. hospital.

A man was killed and his 9-year-old daughter was injured when a small plane crashed on a Florida beach yesterday, authorities say.

The Associated Press reports that the plane crashed in Venice, Fla.'s Caspersen Beach after making a distress call to Venice Municipal Airport around 2:45 p.m. According to the Associated Press, the plane experienced damage to its wing, lost a wheel and broke its propeller. Officials say Georgia resident Ommy Irizarry, 36, and his daughter, Oceana, were either struck by the plane or falling debris. Irizarry was pronounced dead at the scene, while his daughter was transported to St. Petersburg's All Children's Hospital.

Members of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office told the Associated Press that pilot Karl Kokomoor contacted the airport to tell officials he would have to make an emergency landing on the beach. Neither Kokomoor, 57, or 60-year-old passenger David Theen suffered injuries.
