A previously unused method of treatment is believed to have saved the lives of two American missionaries who contracted the Ebola virus while working in Liberia last month.
CNN reports that the conditions of Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol have improved since the National Institutes of Health sent an experimental serum known as ZMapp to Liberia last week in an attempt to save Brantly and Writebol. Brantly began displaying symptoms on Jul. 22, while Writebol's manifested three days later.
CNN adds that Brantly improved within an hour of being given ZMapp and is currently receiving treatment in the U.S., while Writebol is expected to return tomorrow.
ZMapp has not been officially approved, so broader use of it should not be expected. However, CNN did note that four monkeys who contracted Ebola survived after the treatment was administered within 24 hours of their infection.
