A man was shot and killed by an Oklahoma state trooper who was trying to save him from floodwaters on Friday night, .

The Associated Press reports that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol happened upon two men attempting to push a car in rising floodwaters in Okmulgee County, Md around 9:30 p.m. Capt. Paul Timmons notes that it's "not real clear" how everything unfolded, but, according to the Associated Press, the men did not want to leave the vehicle and got into an altercation with the troopers.

At least one of them reportedly attacked one of the troopers once all got onto dry land, prompting his fatal shooting. Timmons told the Associated Press that a weapon was recovered, but it's unclear which of the men it belonged to.

The other man was taken into custody on charges of public intoxication and assault.
