Through quick thinking and action, Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber saved the life of a woman who was reportedly dying of a heroin overdose.
According to an email sent to the Oregonian by the governor's chief spokeswoman, Nkenge Harmon Johnson, Kitzhaber was being driven to a dinner in Portland in Friday night when he spotted someone trying to revive a woman. The former emergency room doctor had his driver pull the vehicle over and instructed his security team to call 911, then rushed over to help the unconscious woman.
As Kitzhaber was performing CPR, emergency responders arrived within 10 minutes and resuscitated the unidentified woman with a defibrillator. She was taken to OHSU Hospital where she's expected to survive.
The Oregonian says that Kitzhaber, who's running for a fourth term as governor, has performed similar acts numerous times at the state Capitol, even helping a man who had a seizure during a gubernatorial debate. That will get you re-elected.
