According to officials, the California Highway Patrol officer who was filmed savagely beating a woman on the side of a Los Angeles freeway last month could face serious criminal charges.

NBC Los Angeles reports that CHP Officer Daniel Andrew was stripped of his gun and badge, then promptly sent home with pay while prosecutors weigh potential charges. On Jul. 1, Andrew was captured punching Marlene Pinnock on an on-ramp to Freeway 10. Pinnock, 51, was treated for injuries to her head, and NBC Los Angeles says she continues to struggle with slurred speech over a month later.

In an interview with NBC Los Angeles, Pinnock said she felt that life was in danger. "He was trying to kill me," she revealed, shaken. "He was trying to beat me to death. He wouldn’t stop."

A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed last month, and the investigation's results will be forwarded to the District Attorney's office, who will decide if it's substantial enough to levy criminal charges against Andrew. In addition, the CHP will conduct its own investigation into the matter.
