"When my idol texts me during a play I’ve written, I respond," Jeremy O. Harris wrote.

Rihanna attends Rihanna's 5th Annual Diamond Ball.

Jeremy O. Harris, playwright for Slave Play on Broadway, took to Twitter Sunday to respond to the criticism that Rihanna has faced for texting during his show over the weekend.

Two things I learned today about the Type of theatre maker I am:

When my idol texts that she’s running late. I hold the curtain for her.

“When my idol texts that she’s running late. I hold the curtain for her,” Harris wrote, referring to Rihanna. “When my idol texts me during a play I’ve written, I respond.”

People who attended the same showing as Rihanna were also able to decipher from Harris’ tweet that the show started late because of the singer. But if you thought you could shame or guilt Harris for making an exception for the “9th character in the play,” then you don’t understand the importance of waiting for Rihanna to arrive.

To dead this weird discourse that has popped up...

The patron saint of the play I wrote is literally a pop star, fashion icon, and Demi-goddess named Rihanna. Her words are all over it. She’s a 9th character in the play.

As for texting during the play, Harris’ defense of Rihanna’s phone use isn’t about making an exception for her, it’s about being “famously ambivalent about phone use in theatre” in general.

I respect Lin’s position, I just don’t share it.

I’m not interested in policing anyone’s relationship to watching a play ESPECIALLY someone who isn’t a part of the regular theatregoing crowd.

Moreover, as ppl on this site know I’m famously ambivalent abt phone use in theatre.

Talk of Rihanna’s texting has led Harris to wonder if the evolution of theater includes phone use.

FYI: miss me w tweets chastising anyone in my audience for using a phone to send a text. I’ve seen too many “general audience members” do it over the last decade to care about it. I’m more interested in theatre evolving and maybe phones are part of that evolution? Who knows.

But that’s another conversation for a later date.
