Celebrities, Politicians, and Other Notable Figures Who Have Tested Positive for Coronavirus

As the weeks go by, it's become clear that no one is safe from the global coronavirus pandemic. With over 182,000 cases worldwide, everyone from athletes to celebrities have discovered that they tested positive for COVID-19. While it can feel like those in Hollywood would never fall prey to this virus for whatever reason, recent revelations from Tom Hanks and Idris Elba have proven that this couldn't be further from the truth.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson 

Tom Hanksshared last week that he and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus. The couple was in Australia for pre-production on the untitled Baz Luhrmann-directed film based on the life of Elvis Presley. Hanks was set to portray Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker. Since revealing the news of their diagnosis, Hanks has occasionally updated his supporters during their time in isolation. 

On March 27, a source told E! News the couple had returned to their Los Angeles home after two weeks of quarantine in Australia.

Idris Elba and Sabrina Dhowre

Idris Elba said he decided to find out if he had coronavirus after learning last Friday that someone he had been in contact with had recently tested positive. Three days later, Elba was informed that he also tested positive for COVID-19. The Hobbs & Shaw star says that he has yet to show any symptoms, but he's now in self-isolation. "We live in a divided world right now, we can all feel it—it's bullshit," he said. "This is real. I just wanted to share my news with you guys. ... Stay positive, and don't freak out." 

In a new interview with Oprah Magazine, Elba's wife Sabrina Dhowre also confirmed that she's also tested positive for the virus. "I don’t feel anything that would come to what people would now expect to be a symptom of coronavirus, which is really strange," she explained. "It might change in the coming weeks, and we’ll keep everyone updated. But it is worrisome that we’re sitting here, two people, and … we’re asymptomatic."

Olga Kurylenko

Olga Kurylenko, who most notably played Camille Montes in the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace, revealed that she tested positive for coronavirus after feeling under the weather for nearly a week. Kurylenko says she was experiencing fatigue, and had a noticeable fever when she decided to get tested. 

In her next Instagram post where she thanked people for their well wishes, Kurylenko responded to people questioning why she was quarantining herself at home after finding out she had coronavirus. "Because hospitals are full and they are only taking patients that are struggling with life, if I understand correctly, I was told that if I get worse to call an ambulance," she wrote. 

Kristofer Hivju

Kristofer Hivju, known for his role as Tormund in Game of Thrones, shared that he and his family are self-isolating at home after testing positive for COVID-19. Hivju said that despite experiencing "mild symptoms of a cold," he understands that this virus could be a "devastating diagnosis" for others. He used the announcement of his personal experience to stress that everyone use all the necessary precautions to avoid their own positive diagnosis. 

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, former television host and the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, also tested positive for coronavirus.  "She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild," a statement from the office of the prime minister said about her condition.

Francis Xavier Suarez

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez tested positive for the coronavirus after coming into contact with a Brazillian government official who also tested positive. 

Unidentified Georgia state senator 

An unidentified Georgia state senator has tested positive for the coronavirus, AJC.com reported on Wednesday, March 18. The person is the first state lawmaker that is known to have contracted COVID-19.

Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL 25th District) became the first member of congress to announce he has tested positive for COVID-19. The 58-year-old lawmaker confirmed his results in a statement Wednesday night, just four days after he began exhibiting symptoms. 

"I want everyone to know that I am feeling much better," he said in the statement. "However, it is important that everyone take this extremely seriously and follow CDC guidelines in order to avoid getting sick and mitigate the spread of this virus.  We must continue to work together to emerge stronger as a country during these trying times."

Diaz-Balart has remained quarantined in his Washington, D.C., apartment for the last several days. He decided to not return to his home in Florida, as his wife, Tia, has "pre-existing conditions that put her at exceptionally high risk."

Utah Rep. Ben McAdams 

Shortly after Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart announced his diagnosis, Utah Congressman Ben McAdams confirmed he, too, had tested positive for coronavirus.

"On Saturday evening, after returning from Washington, D.C., I developed mild cold-like symptoms," the Democratic congressman wrote on Twitter. "In consultation with my doctor on Sunday, I immediately isolated myself in my home. I have been conducting all meetings by telephone. My symptoms got worse and I developed a fever, a dry cough and labored breathing and I remained self-quarantined. On Tuesday, my doctor instructed me to get tested for COVID-19 and following his referral, I went to the local testing clinic for the test. Today I learned that I tested positive."

West Hollywood Mayor John D'Amico

The City of West Hollywood announced its mayor, John D’Amico, has contracted coronavirus.

"The mayor is taking every precaution as directed by his physician and public health directives," city spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. "He is home resting and practicing an abundance of self-care. His husband is doing fine and is doing his part to quarantine at home with Mayor D’Amico. To facilitate their household’s focus on wellness, the mayor is asking for privacy at this time."

Deadline reports the 57-year-old mayor is HIV positive and will remain quarantined for the next two weeks.

Prince Albert of Monaco

Prince Albert released a statement that he tested positive for COVID-19, making him the first head of state to contract the virus.

According to the palace, Albert is working from his home, and his condition "does not cause concern."

Daniel Dae Kim

The former Hawaii Five-0 actor posted a lengthy video on Instagram, in which he detailed his experience testing positive for COVID-19.

"For all those out there, especially teenagers and millennials who think this is not serious, please know that it is,” he said in clip. “And if you treat this without care, you are potentially endangering the lives of millions of people, including your loved ones. So for the sake of everyone else, please follow the guidelines: socially distance, self-isolate, stop touching your face, and of course, wash your hands.” Watch the full video above.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton told ESPN that he tested positive for the coronavirus, Adam Schefter reports.

Indira Varma

Indira Varma, who played Ellaria Sand on Game of Thrones, has tested positive for COVID-19.

Andy Cohen 

Talk show host/producer Andy Cohen has confirmed his coronavirus diagnosis.

The 51-year-old shared the news via Instagram on Friday, just days before he was scheduled to film a special at-home edition of Watch What Happens Live.

"As much as I felt like I could push through whatever I was feeling to do #WWHL from home, we’re putting a pin in that for now so I can focus on getting better," he wrote. "I want to thank all the medical professionals who are working tirelessly for all of us, and urge everybody to stay home and take care of themselves."

Placido Domingo

Opera singer Placido Domingo revealed via Facebook that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Domingo, 79, who hails from Spain, which currently has the fourth-most coronavirus cases in the world, and the third-most deaths, wrote that it was his "moral duty" to make this announcement. He said that he decided to get tested after exhibiting two of the symptoms—fever and cough—synonymous with the virus, and is now in self-isolation with his family.


Slim Thug

Slim Thug took to Instagram Tuesday, where he annoucned that he tested positive for coronavirus.

In the clip, the rapper shares that despite taking all the necessary precautions, he still contracted the virus. Watch his announcement, and his warning, above. 

Greta Thunberg

Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg says it's "extremely like" she contracted COVID-19.

The 17-year-old announced Tuesday that she and her father began exhibiting symptoms associated with the disease following their trip around central Europe.

"Around ten days ago I started feeling some symptoms, exactly the same time as my father — who traveled with me from Brussels," Greta wrote. "I was feeling tired, had shivers, a sore throat and coughed. My dad experienced the same symptoms, but much more intense and with a fever."

The activist said she has been self-quarantined for the last two weeks and has "basically recovered." Greta explained she has not been diagnosed coronavirus because Sweden — her home country — doesn't allow citizens to test themselves "unless you’re in need of emergent medical treatment. Everyone feeling ill are told to stay at home and isolate themselves."

Doris Burke

ESPN reporter Doris Burke, while on Adrian Wojnarowski's while on The Woj Pod, revealed she has tested positive for COVID-19.

James Dolan

The Madison Square Garden Company Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James Dolan has tested positive for coronavirus. Dolan, 64, is currently in self-isolation.

Chris Cuomo

The CNN anchor shared on Twitter that he has tested positive. “I have been exposed to people in recent days who have subsequently tested positive and I had fever, chills and shortness of breath. … We will all beat this by being smart and tough and united!”

The Cuomo Prime Time host and brother of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he’s quarantined in his basement, where he will continue to do shows, and is hoping neither his wife nor kids contracted COVID-19 from him.

Adam Schlesinger

The Fountains of Wayne member and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend songwriter has been hospitalized and is using a ventilator; reports that he is in a coma are untrue. A March 31 article says he’s been in a hospital in upstate New York for over a week “and is receiving excellent medical care.” Schlesinger has three Emmys as well as Oscar, Golden Globe, and Tony nominations.

Fred the Godson

Bronx rapper Fred the Godson took to social media to let people know that he has contracted COVID-19. "Please keep me in y’all prayers," he wrote.

John Prine

Legendary singer-songwriter John Prine died of complications from coronavirus on Tuesday. He was 73.

His family confirmed the tragic news to Rolling Stone, saying Prine was hospitalized last month after exhibiting COVID-19-related his symptoms. His wife/manager Fiona announced on March 17 she had tested positive for the virus after returning from a European tour.
