It’s June, meaning we won’t be subjected to any more United Australia Party ads for the foreseeable future. To celebrate, catch some (or all) of these titles on Netflix this month.

I Am Mother (series)

Mother is a robot that hatched a human embryo in an effort to repopulate the earth after humans became extinct. While a now-teenage girl (Clara Rugaard) and Mother (Rose Byrne) coexist in their bunker fairly harmoniously, Mother’s AI intuition can sometimes run interference on would-be normal interactions. (How to hide your emotions when your moms can “detect an increase in anxiety”?)

The family unit is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) derails everything the girl knows of the outside world, and in turn her trust in Mother.

I Am Mother airs June 7 on Netflix Australia.

Revived by Netflix after being cancelled by ABC, Keifer Sutherland’s Designated Survivor lives to fight another day. For those unfamiliar with the show, it stars Sutherland as POTUS, who landed the oval office gig when a bombing killed everyone else in the line of succession.

While seasons 1 and 2 were a binge-worthy 21 and 22 episodes respectively, season 3 consists of just ten episodes. Hopefully, this means more killer, less filler.

Designated Survivor airs June 7 on Netflix Australia.

The Black Godfather (documentary)

Entertainers, athletes and presidents alike have expressed deep gratitude to Clarence Avant.

While the music exec/film producer has chosen to remain behind the scenes for decades, his incredible story will finally come to light in a documentary directed by Reginald Hudlin and co-produced by his daughter Nicole Avant.

Escaping the Jim Crow South in the ‘60s, Avant became a powerhouse negotiator, redefining the industry for entertainers of colour in a time of growing racial tension.

Dubbed the original influencer, some of the greats that Avant has advised in their personal and professional lives include Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, Quincy Jones, Muhammad Ali, P. Diddy, Diane Warren, Lionel Ritchie, David Geffen and Jamie Foxx.

The Black Godfather airs June 7 on Netflix Australia.

In 1975, Bob Dylan performed across Northern America on a tour called the Rolling Thunder Revue. The four-hour shows were mostly held in small theatres to facilitate an intimate experience with the then-world famous star.

Directing his umpteenth music documentary, Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story is a “part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream” exploration of how Dylan’s music underscored a tumultuous 1970s America.

Rolling Thunder Revue airs June 12 on Netflix Australia.

Murder Mystery (film)

The world could experience nuclear fallout, and still, Netflix and Adam Sandler would continue to churn out lukewarm comedies.

The latest, Murder Mystery, sees NYC detective (Sandler) and his wife (Jennifer Aniston) set off on a 15-years-overdue honeymoon. On the flight over, they score an invite to an intimate gathering on an elderly billionaire’s yacht. In a series of unfortunate (yet predictable) events, they become the prime suspects in his murder. Sure is lucky that Sandler’s character is a cop that can prove their innocence and all.

Murder Mystery airs June 14 on Netflix Australia.

Beats (film)

In Beats, Anthony Anderson plays a disgraced music manager turned high school security guard, who discovers that one of the students (Khalil Everage) is a musical prodigy. Bonding over a mutual love of hip hop won’t be enough – they’ll have to help each other face past demons in order to break into Chicago’s music scene.

Beats is directed by Chris Robinson (ATL) and stars Khalil Everage in his feature film debut. An ode to South Side Chicago, the film will include original music from Young Chop, as well as other Chicago-based producers and artists.

Beats airs June 19 on Netflix Australia.
