This morning, the Winklevoss twins of The Social Network fame announced that they're heading into space by way of Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, and they're paying for it with Bitcoin. Why? Because going to space is damn cool, and they've also invested tons in the cryptocurrency, which has been plagued with many problems recently, and they need as much good publicity around it as possible—even if it means leaving the planet. Also, it's the farthest they can go to escape from the air that their rival, Mark Zuckerberg, breathes.
In a rather long post on their website, Tyler Winklevoss explains their ambitions by giving us a history lesson on past explorers, all leading up to their journey into outer space (one that Justin Bieber is going on as well.)
"Cameron and I have decided to use our bitcoin to take the plunge, or rather propulsion, into space," he explains. "Why? Because Bitcoin and Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic are two technologies that meaningfully represent our focus at Winklevoss Capital - the reduction of pain-points and friction in an effort to build a better world."
