Despite it looking like Chris Evansā€™ time as Captain AmericaĀ was over at the conclusion ofĀ Avengers: Endgame,Ā a report in January claimed that he was in early talks to reprise the role. Though youā€™re free to drive yourself nuts overthinking whether or not itā€™s a smoke screen, here was Evansā€™Ā response:

On Wednesday, meaning more than two months after that report came out, Marvel Studios president Kevin FeigeĀ chimed in. In short, heĀ pretty clearly intimated that itā€™s not happening. That line from the sentence preceding Evansā€™ above tweet still applies, but now weā€™d advise against it.

ā€œI rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself,ā€ Feige said, according toĀ Entertainment Weekly.Ā

The rumor had stemmed from a report byĀ DeadlineĀ that said Evans was in talks to return inĀ the Steve Rogers role, though in the short term that part would probably be something similar to the appearances made by Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) inĀ Captain America: Civil WarĀ andĀ Spider-Man: Homecoming.Ā The report added that Evans could be back in ā€œat least one Marvel property, with the door open for a second film.ā€

Fellow inhabitants of the overall Marvel, and more specific Captain America, cinematic universe(s),Ā Anthony MackieĀ andĀ Sebastian StanĀ (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) also publicly claimed the (now dismissed) report on Evans had caught them off guard.Ā

ā€œI was actually fishing [when the Chris Evans report came out],ā€ Mackie said. ā€œWhen I came back in to get some shrimp, the dude at the dock was like, ā€˜Hey, man! Did you see this shit?!ā€™ Iā€™ve been going to the same guy to get my bait for like 20 years and all of a suddenĀ nowĀ heā€™s a fan. He had no idea who I was. Now heā€™s a fan.

ā€œMarvelā€™s so secretive, and itā€™s so ridiculous about what we know and what we donā€™t know. I have no idea. The dude at the dock selling me shrimp knows more about whatā€™s going on with Marvel than I do.ā€

Adding to that, Stan saidĀ ā€œAnything is possible, right? I saw [Evans]Ā tweeted something about it. So, I donā€™t know. I feel like usually he knows what to say in those things, so I didnā€™t know what to make of it. And I truly donā€™t have any intel on that. I feel like you canā€™t ever think of the words ā€˜Captain Americaā€™ without thinking about Chris Evans. Heā€™s done such an amazing job with it, and I feel like heā€™s always going to have this presence. And he has a presence in our show.ā€
