Guardians of the Galaxy is already a huge hit, bringing in $11.2 million last night alone in screenings beginning at 7 PM. While the film’s advertising and promotional blitz—along with very strong reviews—ensured that it would certainly do well, this is a huge figure for a franchise making its debut.

For some context, it had the second-best pre-release IMAX opening of all-time, coming in behind only Iron Man 3 with $1.9 million on just 354 IMAX screens nationwide. It’s the top Thursday night earner of the summer as well, topping Godzilla’s $9.3 million, The Amazing Spider-Man’s $8.7 million, and X-Men: Days of Future Past’s $8.1 million. It also bested Marvel’s other big release from this year, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which brought in $10.2 million.

If history is any indication, Guardians is on track for a weekend haul that could approach the milestone $100 million mark. Apart from Chris Pratt’s abs and Howard the Duck, that may be the movie’s single greatest accomplishment.
