Donald Sutherland may have just redefined the cross-promotion game.

Accepting the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Villain last night for his work as President Snow in The Hunger Games, Sutherland strolled onstage with a satchel of some sort and tried to explain why he wasn’t such a bad guy. He then went into full Hunger Games mode, tossing berries into the crowd but (fortunately) advising that the audience not actually eat them. As fans of the series will undoubtedly recall, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) use the poisonous nightlock berries to win the first Hunger Games, and the plants show up in later books as well.

If the movie’s marketing team did not plan Sutherland’s little stunt themselves, they have to be absolutely over the moon right now. Without prompting, one of their stars is already in full-on promo mode, using national TV to land some free publicity for the upcoming November 21 release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

It’s not like the movie needs it, but hey, they’ll take it just the same.
