It’s no secret that with 27 seasons in the books, The Simpsons is not exactly the most intriguing show in television. It certainly is not the controversial, attention-grabbing cultural touchstone it once was, and last season’s all-time low ratings back that up.
However, when they tease a major character death, we can’t help but be intrigued.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Simpsons showrunner Al Jean confirmed that a major character will die in the premiere on September 28. As for who it will be, Jean said “It turned out bigger than we thought it was going to be...it's not going to be this blood bath where they all get murdered.”
That answer is both boring and non-committal, but it was also not the end of Jean’s comments. He then revealed that the person who voiced the character in question had won an Emmy for his work, and that the clues surrounding the death made it “obvious.” He then dropped the biggest hint of all:
“[The episode] is called 'A Clown in the Dumps.’”
Could this mean that Krusty the Clown is a dead man walking? Dan Castellaneta—who voices Krusty as well as Homer and several other characters—has indeed won an Emmy, so it would fit that criterion as laid out by Jean. Another possibility could be Sideshow Bob, voiced by Kelsey Grammer, who won an Emmy for his voiceover work in 2006.
We’ll likely have to tune in to find out the answer, and we’re sure all this buzz surrounding the premiere is precisely what Jean and Co. wanted.
