In advance of their Beats Music re-launch, Apple has purchased London-based Semetric, which makes the music analytics platform Musicmetric. The software—which helps track key stats like digital sales figures, number of streams, and social media sharing—would likely be integrated with the new Beats Music when it resurfaces.
Apple provided only this brief statement to The Guardian, who originally reported the story: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plan.”
The purchase price is not known, but The Guardian article speculates that it may have been as high as $50 million. It’s also not known when Beats Music is even going to appear again, although one report suggests that it will be coming with a new iOS in March of this year.
